On election day, students at Sebring B.L. Miller Elementary learned about voting from the village mayor.
Mayor James Harp spoke to the district’s kindergarten through fifth grade students, reading and discussing a book about voting with the students. He shared information with the students about the process of voting - including who can vote, how individuals vote, and what they vote for. Harp, who began service in publicly elected office as a Sebring village council member in 2002, also talked about the process of campaigning for office.
After the book, the students asked the mayor questions - about what he does as mayor, how old you need to be in order to run for mayor, voting, and more.
“This visit gave our students an opportunity to connect with impactful adults beyond our school walls,” says B.L. Miller Principal Nichole Hanley. “We are so grateful to have such an engaged community and leaders who support our schools.”
