DID YOU KNOW...the Sebring Local School District applied for and was awarded a $1,030,318.00 School Quality Improvement Grant offered through the Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Improvement and Innovation? With the grant money, Sebring Local Schools plan to hire a site-based service coordinator, who will develop student and family supports. The service coordinator will also establish partnerships between the school, community organizations and agencies, businesses, and faith-based organizations to provide support services. The grant money will also help provide professional development to institute culturally responsive or trauma-informed practices, expand family engagement and community connections, and address identified climate issues.“Creating a strong engagement with our community and families and quality nonacademic supports are essential to creating conditions that help students improve and succeed,” said Toni Viscounte, Sebring Schools Superintendent. “Sebring Local Schools are fortunate to receive this grant.”This grant is focused upon providing support and oversight to build the capacity of districts/schools to engage in inclusive, continuous, and targeted improvement in order to raise student achievement that is sustainable.
DID YOU KNOW ...that Sebring Local Schools has an Online Academy?
The Online Academy was established for students who need to make up credits through credit recovery coursework, or for those who would like to take electives that are not currently offered on our campus. Foreign languages that are not currently offered on our campus that are available online are French and German. Spanish is offered in a traditional classroom setting at McKinley. Additional interesting electives are: Life Skills, Nutrition and Wellness, Web design,, Mythology and Folklore and many more. Students are provided the opportunity to go to the computer lab during their study hall to take an online course. In addition, if they have a full course load at school, they may complete the elective(s) at home on their own time after school. Language course are yearlong courses and elective courses are semester courses. If your child is looking to enhance his/her coursework through an online elective, please contact Mrs. Everhart. An appointment will be scheduled to review any questions or concerns you may have. Registration in the coursework, should your child be interested, will also be handled at that time.
DID YOU KNOW....Sebring's football team is bringing back their annual golf outing?!
Outfitting players can be very expensive with equipment and uniform costs reaching over $1000 per player. Our golf outing helps to make sure our student-athletes are in the most up to date and safest equipment to keep them safe and ensure a great experience. This years golf outing will be held at Pleasant View Golf Club located at 14605 Louisville St NE Paris, Ohio 44669 on June 30th. Cost Is $65 per man and includes greens fees, carts, lunch at the turn, drinks and a catered dinner.
In addition to teams boosters and area businesses have the opportunity to become a hole sponsor at 4 different levels. Each level comes with various sponsorship signs and advertisements.
DID YOU KNOW...Sebring's weight room is open to ALL Sebring athletes in grades 7-12.
In the First 6 weeks of this years program the 14 players attending added 2145 lbs to their 3 core lifts (dead lift, squat and bench press.) Weight lifting has many benefits including better cardiovascular health, controlled blood sugar levels, reduced injury risk and improved flexibility and mobility. Every competitive athletic program can benefit from strength training in both male and female athletics. Lebron James bench presses over 300 lbs. When Tiger woods was in his prime he could squat over 350 lbs. Mike Trout Dead lifts 450 lbs. The Stanford women's volleyball team, Connecticut women's basketball team and USA women's Olympic gymnastics team, and the reigning national champion Louisville Cardinals cheer team all utilize strength training.
The weight room is open Monday, Wednesday & Thursday from 4:30-7:30 and Saturdays from 10 am until Noon.
DID YOU KNOW... Sebring has a Cheerleading Program?
Our program is for any student interested in grades 7-12. The squads consist of junior high, JV and Varsity members. Cheerleaders promote community and school spirit and pride, are active members of Spirit Crew, perform in the Firemen’s Festival Parade, pep rallies and cheer at all football and high school basketball games. Sebring Cheerleaders also volunteer at community dinners and assist with Sebring Little Trojans Cheer, as well as raise money for Breast Cancer Research organizing a pink out football game. Not only do they cheer all football and basketball games, the girls perform routines of their own at The Canfield Fair, ZTA’s Pink Ribbon Cheer Classic at Youngstown State University, and at The Holiday Cheer Extravaganza which is a competition held right at Sebring McKinley Jr./Sr. High School.
DID YOU KNOW... Sebring has a volleyball program that starts in elementary school?
Our volleyball program starts at the elementary level with 2 wonderful coaches Mrs D'Ostroph and Miss Kirksey in grades 3 and up. The high school players host a Saturday camp in the fall where all the grade levels play on a team with the high school athletes being the. Coach of the team. Year after year this is a favorite day for players, coaches, and parents alike. This year our returning high school players will have the opportunity to go to Cincinnati to play in the Friendship Cup. They will play volleyball for 3 days and get to go to Kings Island. This is an event I would like to see become tradition for our program. For the past 2 years we have also participated in a summer tournament at Campbell . We are currently holding open gyms on Sunday nights every other Sunday. You can find lots of pictures and info on our Facebook page Sebring Volleyball. Our goal isn’t to make just a better volleyball player or program, but to help build more confident and stronger female athletes. DID YOU KNOW...Sebring has a choir?
Our choir also performs three concerts every year featuring both traditional choir and pop music, and has produced a number of excellent solo singers. They spend some time every year studying popular musical theater shows as well. Members of the choir have participated in local musical theater programs and community and church choirs.
DID YOU KNOW...Sebring has a Girls Basketball Program?
Our program has teams from 4th grade all the way up to the Varsity level at the high school. Each of our teams competes in the MVAC. During the 2018-2019 seasons, our 4th/5th grade team finished 2nd in the league as did our 6th grade team. Our JH team competed hard each night and showed vast improvement from the beginning of the season to the end. Finally, our Varsity team won 5 games this season. This was a major improvement considering the program had won 2 games in the last 2 seasons. The whole program looks to build Confidence, Commitment, Dedication, and Desire into each player that ultimately will continue to improve the whole program. DID YOU KNOW.....Sebring has a fast-pitch softball team for girls in grades 9-12?
Our 2019 fast-pitch team consists of 18 girls, 3 Seniors, 2 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, and 10 Freshmen. We play 27 game starting at the end of March running through the middle of May. Our games consist of MVAC League games and non-league games. Our girls participated in the Snap-raise fundraiser and are still looking for donations to help raise money to help suppor the team. Our first game was March 23 against Campbell, it was a double header and final scores were 19-2 and 20-2 with Sebring winning both games. We will also be playing 5 games with JV players playing an extra 4 innings.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring has a marching band?
Our marching band starts practices during the summer with music camps and band camp. They travel to Kennywood to participate in their band parade during the summer. They also participate in the Beaver Local band show as well as the Salem band show. They march in the town's Halloween parade and also in the newly formed Christmas parade. The band also does three concerts during the year for the enjoyment of our community. Members of the band sell calendars and fruit to help raise money. The band recently acquired new uniforms and wear them proudly during all football games and band shows. They also participate in the Mahoning Valley Festival Of Bands every spring at Hubbard High School with eleven other local concert bands. Band is just another word for family in Sebring.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring Local Schools has installed security doors for the safety of your students?
Also each classroom is provided a door barricade which is used during lock downs. In addition, Sebring employs a School Resource Officer that is on duty all day. Sebring is putting your student's safety first.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring Local Schools provides busing for their students and may provide transportation to open enrolled students if they live within a reasonable distance from Sebring schools? DID YOU KNOW Sebring Schools provides free breakfast and lunch to all their students?
ALL Sebring students from Pre-K to 12th grade receive a free breakfast in their classrooms every morning. They also receive a free lunch. The Jr/Sr High can purchase extras/a la carte items every day, and the elementary occasionally. Two days a week, the Salad Bar is available for the junior high and high school level students as a lunch option
DID YOU KNOW Sebring has a junior high and high school track team?
Our teams consist of both boys and girls and they compete in the MVAC. Events include sprints, middle distance runs, long runs, relays, hurdles, long jump, and high jump. The track team has participated in four fundraisers, utilizing local businesses; to raise money for a high jump pit. Last year our middle school team did exceptionally well at the Mahoning County Championship with a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and three 5th place finishes. We even had a first-place finish at the MVAC championship. All of this was accomplished by first-timer runners. This season the high school team already has 16 signed up but there is always room for more. Track season runs from March 4th into early May so there’s still time to sign up. DID YOU KNOW B.L. Miller has a Gold Club Award?
The Gold Club Award is an achievement award recognizing students willing to exceed typical expectations. This award is for 4-6th grade students, earning all As & Bs, having no more than 2 excused absences, completing 10 hours of community service per 9-week period.
A change for this year will be the monthly recognition of 4th-6th grade students earning the Gold Club Award instead of one end-of-the year dinner. The students will earn nine week awards.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring high school has an Ecology Club?
The Ecology Club has raised $706 to purchase turkeys and food for the Thanksgiving food drive sponsored by the Jr High student senate. The Club members volunteer at the Stark County Humane Society helping to socialize the animals for easier adoptions. They also conduct a weekly recycling program at the high school by collecting paper and plastics from all of the rooms and offices.
DID YOU KNOW The B.L. Miller has a KGP?
KGP stands for “Kids Going Places.” This is a monthly recognition for students who are demonstrating they understand and follow our rules. Students are also chosen because they are performing expected and successful work habits. Students who earn a monthly KGP card earn privileges the following month, as long as they have their card.

DID YOU KNOW Sebring students take several educational field trips?
For example, our kindergarten classes go to Whitehouse Farms to learn about agriculture. Our fourth, fifth, and sixth graders visited the Ohio Supreme Court to learn about the courthouse, trials and Ohio laws. They also went to Packard Music Symphony to learn music appreciation. Second graders tour the McKinley Museum. Third-gradedrs take a tour of Sebring and go to the Cleveland Zoo. Our fifth-grade students went to an outdoor education camp. Our Spanish IV CCP class gets to go to Jalisco's. Our high school students attend a STEM Entrepreneurship & Innovation Forum, Our SADD students attend a SADD seminar followed by a Cavaliers game. High School students attend the YSU I Believe Foundation. Our Choir has performed at the Maronite Center. The Jr. High students experienced the Great Lake Science Center. Our high school Astronomy class gets to go to the YSU Planetarium. Sebring McKinley Jr. & Sr. High School students attend the English Festival at YSU. Sebring provides a lot of fun, educational trips.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring Local Schools has a Music Booster Club?
The club are comprised of parents of band and choir students from fifth-grade to seniors. Music boosters meet the first Monday every month at 6 p.m. in the high school band room. Boosters chaperone football games, band shows, and other activities that the high school band participates in. We also run the concession stand at home junior high football games and a booth on the 4th of July in the park. The boosters are always looking for more parents to be involved and join the team!
DID YOU KNOW B.L. Miller Elementary has 14 sixth-grade students that volunteer their time each month to make sure our students are crossing the roads safely?
Before and after school are very busy times around our elementary building. Some students wait for rides home, while others walk to and from school everyday. Traffic must be stopped to allow these children to cross the street. Our safety patrols dress for the weather and stand in the busiest intersections to help make it all possible. Our safety patrol also make sure walkers cross between the lines and stop at the curb to watch for traffic. Thanks to our safety patrol, arrival and dismissal on our school grounds run smoothly! At the end of the school year, the Youth Foundation sponsored by our local American Legion pays for our trip to the North Canton Skate and Entertainment Center. It is an evening full of roller skating, rock climbing, bumper cars, laser tag and pizza.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring McKinley has a very active Alumni Association?
This group works diligently to support high school students with yearly scholarships. Donations and money raised from events throughout the year help to fund these scholarships.
The Annual Alumni Banquet is held in the spring and recognizes distinguished alumni from SHS. These alumni are invited back to the community and given the opportunity to speak about how Sebring shaped their lives. An Alumni Mixer was also held for the first time this year to get individuals from all classes together while raising funds for the association. Alumni newsletters are also sent out throughout the year highlighting news and upcoming events. DID YOU KNOW that Sebring McKinley High School has an Athletic Hall of Fame?
Originally established in 1970, the Hall of Fame inducted classes in 1970, 1972, and 1975 before disbanding.
The Hall of Fame was revived in 2005 under the leadership of Mike Seidel and Geoff Jurica and has been inducting members annually ever since. Jurica and JoAnn Jones are currently the co-chairs of the committee, which consists of 10 members, many of whom are former inductees.
Nominations for athletes are taken until June 30 of each year, and then the committee meets to vote on nominees in the fall. Each December the annual Hall of Fame induction is held during a basketball game, where inductees are recognized and presented with plaques. Each inductee receives a personal plaque while a plaque touting accomplishments also hangs in the Hall of Fame hallway outside the gym. Following the varsity game, a reception is held in Brook Gym.
This Saturday, five athletes will be inducted: Sean Thomas ’99, Josh Dean ’03, Joe Amabeli ’05, Joey James ’05, and Zach Tieche ’08
DID YOU KNOW We host am after-prom?
This even offers students fun and safe activities to participate in after the dance. Parents that are on the after-prom committee plan the event. The committee also raises money throughout the school year in order to host the after-prom. Help is needed for creating fundraising ideas, to planning the fundraisers, and assisting with them. One of our fundraisers will be selling baked goods at home basketball games. We need donations of baked goods and volunteers to sell the treats. It is a lot of work, but it is worth it in the end. You are creating memories that will last a lifetime for these students. Any help you can offer throughout the school year plays a big role in after-prom. Please contact Debbie Green if you can help in any way. The students need your help to make after-prom a memory that they will forever have.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring has a College Credit Plus Program?
College Credit Plus can help you earn college and high school credits at the same time by taking college-level courses at the high school. The purpose of this program is to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wide variety of options to college-ready students. Taking College Credit Plus courses are free. That means no cost for tuition, books or fees. You must have a letter of intent completed and returned to Mr. D'Amico, the school guidance counselor if you wish to participate in the program. You can pick one up in the high school office.
DID YOU KNOW the 7th and 8th grade added VEX IQ robotics to school this year?
Students build robots and learn how to program them to complete various tasks and conquer obstacles. Students in the class learn how to make their robot identify colors, light up, and play sounds. They will even compete with other teams in head to head battles.
DID YOU KNOW our school has Destination Imagination teams?
Destination Imagination is sponsored by Ohio Kids for Creativity. The mission is to develop opportunities that inspire the global community of learners to utilize diverse approaches in applying 21st-century skills and creativity. The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus, and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts, and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem-solving process. There are seven fun and engaging open-ended challenges in science, technology, engineering, visual and performing arts, improvisation, service learning, and early learning provided each year. Teams may showcase their solutions to their chosen challenges at a regional tournament. Each challenge is designed to enable students to apply knowledge to novel opportunities. Participants with the top-scoring Challenge solutions progress from regional competitions to state or country competitions to Global Finals.
DID YOU KNOW that Sebring McKinley Senior High School has a Student Senate?
The High School Student Senate is comprised of class officers grades 9-12. They are responsible for the Veterans Day assembly, which was held on Monday, November 12th. They also play a role in the Saint Baldricks event. The students work on creating a positive atmosphere in the school building.
DID YOU KNOW that Sebring McKinley Junior High has a student senate?
They are the voice for the junior high in the high school. Students who apply to be a member must have a certain grade point average and possess good-character traits. Members take part in many activities that help the community, which include: after-school peer tutoring, host bingo at Sebring Villas, make blankets for Akron Children's Hospital, volunteer at the B.L. Miller Elementary Fun Fair, host a Thanksgiving food drive, and create goodie bags for the football team. Student Senate is developing other projects, as well.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring Local Schools have a Friday Food Club? It provides students with food for the weekend and holiday breaks. Forms are located at the main office at each building, just ask the secretary for one. The food club is sponsored by Acts II Ministries. Local churches help Acts II by making food donations. This is just one of the many benefits of being apart of our wonderful community.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring McKinley Junior/Senior High School has a Spirit Crew Club?
The club has over 30 student-members. They are responsible for deciding the themes of the student section and spirit days. The members also determine events for pep rallies. This year Spirit Crew Club started a new tradition, which was making Friday's spirit theme at the football the theme for the school day.
DID YOU KNOW the B.L. Miller Elementary School staff has a wonderful support group called Partners in Education (P.I.E.)?
This group raises money to help improve every child's experience at B.L. Miller. They help decorate classrooms and provide food during parent-teach conferences. P.I.E also sponsors a lot of events that students enjoy throughout the school year. The group meets on the third Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. at B.L. Miller Elementary. If you'd like to volunteer to can contact Stephanie Ackerman, Samantha Lynn, or Melinda Bandy-Vecchio.
DID YOU KNOW B.L. Miller has a student senate? Sixth-Grade Student Senate is responsible for recording video-announcements each morning?
They also run a school store and a DOJO cart. Senators gather recycling from classrooms each Tuesday and Thursday, plan school dances, and are involved in charity work. For instance, student senate raised for $400 for Red Nose Week, which is a cause to raise awareness and money in order to end childhood poverty. Student Senate also works with Mrs.Jackson on activities for Red Ribbon Week and No Child Eats Alone. A big initiative for student senate members was to promote kindness this school year. They've done so by showing the movie "Wonder," as well as choosing a theme of "Choose Kind" for the school year. Senators are always ready to help Mrs. Whipkey when need, and they are always looking for new ideas.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring High School has a Language Club?
Any high school student can be involved with Language Club, even if you are not in Spanish. The Language Club will have a meeting on October 2nd to elect officers and begin their fundraiser of Stoller Pastries: butter braids, pumpkin rolls, etc. Proceeds will be used for National Foreign Language Week activities and anybody going to Mexico in 2020 may put their profits toward the trip. Language Club is planning a trip to Mexico in 2020. The trip is for any jr. high or high school student that wants to go.
DID YOU KNOW Sebring High School has a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) group?
FCA meets every other Friday during lunch in Mrs. Hollback's room. All students in grades 9-12 are welcome to attend! We eat, play games, and have a small lesson with a discussion. Then we wrap things up with our "Rock-it-Out Circle". You can stop by and see Mrs. Hollback in room 101 for more info!
DID YOU KNOWt Sebring Junior/Senior High School has a drama department that performs a play once a year?
This year's play is "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," written by Michele L. Vacca. All students in grades 7th through 12th had a chance to try out. The play will be presented on Friday, November 9, 2018 and Saturday, November 10, 2018.
