Sebring Local Schools Awarded School Quality Improvement Grant

Sebring, OH - The Sebring Local School District was awarded $1,030,318.00 thanks to the Ohio Department of Education’s Office of Improvement and Innovation’s School Improvement Grant.

With the grant money, Sebring Local Schools plan to hire a site-based service coordinator, who will develop student and family supports. The service coordinator will also establish partnerships between the school, community organizations and agencies, businesses, and faith-based organizations to provide support services.

The grant money will also help provide professional development to institute culturally responsive or trauma-informed practices, expand family engagement and community connections, and address identified climate issues.

“Creating a strong engagement with our community and families and quality nonacademic supports are essential to creating conditions that help students improve and succeed,” said Toni Viscounte, Sebring Schools Superintendent. “Sebring Local Schools are fortunate to receive this grant.”

This grant is focused upon providing support and oversight to build the capacity of districts/schools to engage in inclusive, continuous, and targeted improvement in order to raise student achievement that is sustainable.

Sebring McKinley Students Win Awards in Local Contest

Sebring, OH- Two students from Sebring McKinley High School were recognized during the Jewish Community Relations Council Annual Holocaust Commemoration Program at the Mahoning County Courthouse Thursday, May 2, 2019.

Gabrielle Hill and Hailee Tewksbury placed in the 26th Annual Student Holocaust Writing/Media Contest sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation. Gabrielle was awarded first place in the Grades 11 & 12 Art Division. Hailee placed third in the Grade 9 & 10 Poetry Divison.

“A Night at the Zoo” Hosting at B.L. Miller Elementary

Sebring, OH-The B.L. Miller Elementary School cafeteria will be transformed into a “zoo” on Tuesday, April 30 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Second-grade students will present research projects on animals they have been studying. Each student will be dressed as the animal he/she picked for his/her research project. Students will have electronic and oral presentations prepared to share with visitors.

Parents and loved ones are encouraged to attend to check out the many attractions at B.L. Miller Elementary’s zoo.

Sebring Schools Raise Money for St. Jude Hospital

Sebring, OH - Sebring Local Schools raised $3027.00 during its annual St. Jude Children’s Hospital Math-A-Thon.

The St. Jude Math-A-Thon ran from April 1, 2019, until April 18, 2019. The Math-A-Thon allows students to practice math skills while raising money for the kids of St. Jude. The top three fundraisers this year are fifth-grade student Gage Mates ($1,050), fourth-grade student Audrey Eaton ($539), and fourth-grade student Sophia Clark ($400).

This was the 26th year Sebring Local Schools have participated in the Math-A-Thon. Sebring Schools have collected over $60,000 throughout that time.

“I’d like to thank Sebring for being a special part of this celebration and for the community’s commitment to the children of St. Jude Children’s Hospital,” said Jeana D’Ostroph, B.L. Miller Elementary Teacher. “Together, we can make a difference.”

Sebring School Board Passes Moving Sixth-Grade

Sebring, OH - The Sebring Board of Education voted to move sixth-grade from B.L. Miller Elementary School to Sebring McKinley Junior/Senior High School during its meeting on Monday, April 15, 2019.

Sebring Local Schools plan to introduce a new science and math curriculum to sixth, seventh, and eighth-grades during the 2019-2020 school year. Placing sixth-grade inside the junior high school will make it easier for students to participate in the classes.

“The move is what we feel is best for our students,” said Toni Viscounte, Sebring Local Schools Superintendent. “This is strictly an educational decision and was not influenced by finances.”

The Sebring Board of Education hosted a committee meeting on April 1st, 2019 to hear public feedback on the possibility of moving sixth-grade.

Ohio Department of Education Superintendent Visits Sebring Local Schools

Sebring, OH - Sebring Local Schools hosted the Ohio Department of Education’s Superintendent of Public Instruction and two members of the Ohio State Board of Education on Friday, March 29, 2019.

State Superintendent Paolo DeMaria, board member John Hagan, and board member Mark Lamoncha visited Sebring McKinley Junior/Senior High School and B.L. Miller Elementary School.

During their visit, DeMaria, Hagan, and Lamoncha watched and learned about an eighth-grade robotics class, a high school computer-simulated science lab, a high school English language arts class, an interactive read aloud in the elementary school, and a kindergarten class.

They also discussed Sebring Local Schools’ military-friendly programs. Sebring Local Schools were commemorated with a Purple Star Designation in December 2018. The Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.

Sebring Local Schools Hosted Seventh All-Star Alumni Series

SEBRING, OHIO - Sebring McKinley Junior and Senior High School hosted its seventh “All-Star Alumni Series” program on Thursday, March 28, 2019.

Jake Arbitter (Class of 2012), Haley Jackson (Class of 2012), and Savanna Rowe (Class of 2016) were the event’s speakers.

Arbitter currently works as the Crew Chief at Lovell Racing, a racing team based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Jackson graduated from the University of Mount Union with a degree in Criminal Justice, and she coaches volleyball for Sebring McKinley Junior High School. Rowe attends Mount Union and is pursuing a degree in art education.

The “All-Star Alumni Series” was created this school year as a way to inspire students at Sebring Local Schools. Alumni return to Sebring McKinley High School and tell current Trojans about their time at Sebring Local Schools and the impact the school district had on their lives.

Sebring Students to Raise Money for St. Jude Hospital

Sebring, OH - Sebring Local Schools will kick off its annual St. Jude Children’s Hospital Math-A-Thon on Monday, April 1, 2019.

Participating students will be given a St. Jude Math-A-Thon Funbook, which will guide students through educational and fun math problems. The St. Jude Math-A-Thon allows students to practice math skills while helping the kids of St. Jude. Fundraising efforts could be life-changing for a patient and his/her family.

This is the 26th year Sebring Local Schools will participate in the Math-A-Thon. Sebring Schools have collected over $57,000 throughout that time. The district’s goal is to raise over $5,000 this year.

According to St. Jude Children’s Reseach Hospital, fundraising programs like the Math-A-Thon allow the hospital to lead the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

“I’d like to thank Sebring for being a special part of this celebration and for the community’s commitment to the children of St. Jude Children’s Hospital,” said Jeana D’Ostroph, B.L. Miller Elementary Teacher. “Together, we can make a difference.”

Ohio Department of Education Superintendent to visit Sebring Local Schools

 

Sebring, OH - Sebring Local Schools will host the Ohio Department of Education’s Superintendent of Public Instruction on Friday, March 29, 2019.

Sebring High School Raises Over $4,000 For Waterloo High School Freshman

SEBRING, OH- Sebring McKinley Junior and Senior High School raised $4,052.25 to donate to Waterloo High School freshman Brenden Kidikas and his family.

Kidikas is battling brain cancer. Throughout February, Sebring students and staff participated in multiple fundraisers to help support Brenden in his fight. Sebring sold #HopeForBrenden t-shirts, gave students the opportunity to pie someone for fifty cents, and raised money through Penny Wars to donate to the Kidikas family.

Battling brain cancer is near and dear to the Sebring community. Emily Waseman, a Sebring student, died to brain cancer in 2014. For the past two years, Sebring Local Schools have sold shirts in memory of Emily to help raise money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a childhood cancer research charity. This year, the money went to the Kidikas family. The shirts say “One League, One Team, One Fight #HopeForBrenden.” The back of the shirt reads “In Memory of Emily Waseman.”

The amount raised was revealed during an assembly on Friday, March 1, 2019. Sebring McKinley Principal Joe Krumpak agreed to be pied if the school could raise $3,000, and Sebring Local Schools Superintendent Toni Viscounte agreed to be pied if $4,000 was raised. Both Krumpak and Viscounte were graciously pied during the assembly.

Sebring McKinley Junior and Senior High School Invite Families To “Our House”

Sebring, OH- Sebring McKinley Junior and Senior High School wants to show families some of the exciting experiences provided to Sebring students.

Sebring McKinley is hosting Parents Night on Thursday, March 21, 2019 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Those who attend will be treated to dinner and get to take part in three 20-minute classroom activities.

The activities are separated into three categories: heart, courage, and brains. These activity themes relate to Sebring McKinley’s theme for the school year, which is “There’s No Place Like Home.” Families have the chance to participate in making blankets for Akron Children’s Hospital, engage in robotics, learn about traveling abroad, and many other things.

Families who plan to attend are asked to return RSVP forms by Wednesday, March 13, 2019. Forms were sent home with students and also can be found in the high school office.

B.L. Miller Elementary Invites Families to Family Fun Night

Sebring, OH - B.L. Elementary School is hosting a night of fun and education on Thursday, March 7, 2019.

Family Fun Night will focus on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics or STEAM. There will be stations for math games, Google Chromebooks, and other activities. STEAM Train Enterprises, a local organization that helps integrate STEAM education into classrooms, will be in attendance. They will provide robotic, coding, and engineering challenges for students.

Family Fun Night will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at B.L. Miller Elementary School. Kindergarten through sixth-grade students and their families are invited and encouraged to attend.

For those who plan to attend Family Fun Night, RSVP forms are asked to be returned to school by Tuesday, March 5, 2019.

Sebring Local Schools Hosted Sixth All-Star Alumni Series

SEBRING, OHIO - Sebring McKinley Junior and Senior High School hosted its sixth “All-Star Alumni Series” Thursday, February 21, 2019.

Shawn and Mary Jackson were the event’s speakers. Both graduated from Sebring High School in 1987 and are now married with four children. 

Shawn Jackson is currently the principal at Alliance High School. Jackson has taught at Alliance City Schools, Southern Local Schools, and Plain Local Schools prior to becoming principal at AHS. Shawn is a member of the Sebring High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Mary Jackson is currently the school counselor at B.L. Miller Elementary School for Sebring Local Schools. She is the former high school counselor at Sebring McKinley High School. Jackson also taught at Sebring McKinley, as well as at West Branch Local Schools.

“I’ve been in this school system my entire life,” said Mary Jackson. “I love this district, it is a part of me, and I hope that I am making it a better place.”

The “All-Star Alumni Series” was created this school year as a way to inspire students at Sebring Local Schools. Alumni return to Sebring McKinley High School and tell current Trojans about their time at Sebring Local Schools and the impact the school district had on their lives.

Sebring High School Wants To Provide Hope To Brenden

Sebring, OH-  Sebring and Waterloo may be Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference rivals, but off the court, Sebring High School is joining a Waterloo freshman’s fight with cancer.

Waterloo freshman Brenden Kidikas is battling brain cancer. Throughout February, Sebring students and staff will participate in multiple fundraisers to help support Brenden in his battle.  

Battling brain cancer is near and dear to the Sebring community. Emily Waseman, a Sebring first-grader, died to brain cancer in 2014. For the past two years, Sebring Local Schools have sold shirts in memory of Emily to help raise money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a childhood cancer research charity. This year, the money will support the Kidikas family.

Sebring McKinley Student Wins Poetry Contest

Sebring, OH - Sebring McKinley High School freshman Mary Quinn received a visit from a member of The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County on Thursday, February 14, 2019.

Amanda Kollar, Assistant Supervisor of the Canfield and Sebring Public Libraries, presented Quinn with her award for winning the 10th Annual Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest. Quinn was awarded a plaque and a check for winning the contest.

The poetry contest honors Danielle Scott, a former Teen Advisory Board member who died of cancer. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. Students enter one poem with a theme of their choice.

Quinn was selected out of 240 entrants.

Sebring, OH - The Ohio School Boards Association is celebrating School Board Recognition Month in January 2019. Sebring Local School District joined other districts throughout Ohio to recognize the important contributions school board members make to their communities.

Sebring Local Schools Superintendent Toni Viscounte presented the five Sebring School Board members with certificates of recognition during the board meeting Monday, January 14th.

Sebring, OH - Sebring Local Schools declared the winner of the B.L. Miller Elementary School Spelling Bee Thursday, January 3, 2019.

B.L. Miller Elementary sixth-grade student Jay Zheng won the school’s spelling bee. Fifth-grader Jayda Sanor was the runner-up. The competition lasted 11 rounds, and the winning word was “glands.” Fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students competed in the spelling bee.

Zheng will now compete in the Vindicator Regional Spelling Bee in March.

Sebring Local Schools would like to congratulate Jay, Jayda, and all the students that competed in the spelling bee.
